You may do this with an inexpensive device called a hygrometer. The optimal humidity level is from around 35% to 45%, even though 15% on either side is acceptable. These filters are a MUST have, but not at $26, but here is a way to save By ShopTilYouDrop Having 2 of the HCM-6009 humidifiers, I use alot of these filters each season. Lesson learned, stock up on them BEFORE Fall with they are about $8 each as they are now charging a ridiculous price of $26. Up until a week ago, Home Depot had them online for $7.98, they have since doubled to $14.
SOLUTION: Just got home from Walmart and while I was there I was looking for the HC14 filter. Only kind they carried were Sunbeam filters, but I started looking at a particular one that looked identical to the HC14 in size and design; Sunbeam SF221PDQ-UM Humidifier Filter. Picked one up and just got home to try it and it works. Exact same size for only $10.
Sunbeam SF221PDQ-UM Humidifier Filter: * Contains antimicrobial product additive for built-in protection * Inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew * Features Arm & Hammer Baking Soda to naturally deodorize the air
While you are there, pick up a bottle of Sunbeam Bacteriostat Solution for $2.
Sunbeam Bacteriostat Solution: * Designed for Cool Mist Humidifiers * Controls the growth of bacteria and algae in humidifier tanks * Simplifies the cleaning process * Prolongs the life of the wick filter

Tip for a longer lasting HC-14 filter By Karl W. Weaver This Replacement filter works perfectly on my Honeywell HCM-6000. I found that the filter will last longer if you flip it every other water fill up. This will not allow any one side to stay in the water too long and turn sour.
